Cyfluthrin: A Potent Insecticide with Cautious Use
Cyfluthrin, a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, has become a mainstay in pest control practices worldwide. Its effectiveness against a broad spectrum of insects, from cockroaches and ants to termites and mosquitoes, has made it a popular choice for homeowners, farmers, and public health professionals. However, cyfluthrin's potency comes with a responsibility for its safe and responsible use. This article delves into the world of cyfluthrin, exploring its properties, applications, and the potential risks associated with its use.
Chemical Makeup and Mode of Action
Cyfluthrin belongs to the class of insecticides known as pyrethroids. These synthetic compounds mimic the insecticidal properties of natural pyrethrins, derived from chrysanthemum flowers. Cyfluthrin disrupts the nervous system of insects by targeting sodium channels in their nerve cells. This disrupts the normal flow of electrical signals, leading to paralysis and ultimately death of the insect.
The specific mode of action of cyfluthrin offers several advantages. Unlike some other insecticides, cyfluthrin has a delayed effect. This allows insects to come into contact with the treated area and transfer the insecticide to others before succumbing themselves, leading to a domino effect of elimination within a colony. Additionally, cyfluthrin exhibits a long-lasting residual effect, remaining active on treated surfaces for weeks or even months depending on the formulation and environmental conditions.
Applications of Cyfluthrin
The versatility of cyfluthrin translates into a wide range of applications across various sectors:
Agriculture: Cyfluthrin is used to control a variety of pests that damage crops, including beetles, weevils, leafminers, and caterpillars. It can be applied directly to crops or used as a seed treatment to protect seedlings from pests.
Urban and Domestic Pest Control: Cyfluthrin is a common ingredient in many household insecticides used to control cockroaches, ants, spiders, and other crawling insects. It is also used in professional pest control treatments for homes and businesses.
Public Health: Cyfluthrin plays a role in mosquito control programs, particularly those targeting vectors of diseases like malaria and dengue fever. It can be applied to bed nets and indoor residual spraying to kill mosquitoes.
Livestock Protection: Cyfluthrin helps protect livestock from flies, lice, and ticks, which can cause discomfort, reduce productivity, and transmit diseases.
Potential Risks and Responsible Use
While cyfluthrin is a powerful tool for pest control, it is essential to be aware of its potential risks and use it responsibly. Here's a breakdown of some key considerations:
Toxicity: Cyfluthrin can be toxic to humans and animals if ingested, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. Always follow label instructions for safe handling and application.
Environmental Impact: Cyfluthrin can be harmful to beneficial insects, such as bees and ladybugs, which are crucial for pollination and maintaining a healthy ecosystem. It is important to use targeted application methods and choose formulations less harmful to beneficial insects whenever possible.
Water Contamination: Cyfluthrin is moderately persistent in the environment and can contaminate water sources if not used properly. Avoid applying cyfluthrin near bodies of water or storm drains.
Resistance: Overuse of cyfluthrin can lead to the development of resistance in insect populations. This means that the insecticide becomes less effective over time, requiring higher application rates or a switch to different insecticides.
Alternatives to Cyfluthrin
Several less-toxic alternatives to cyfluthrin exist for pest control, depending on the specific target pest and situation. These include:
Botanical Insecticides: Insecticides derived from plants like neem oil or pyrethrum can be effective against certain pests and are generally less harmful to humans and the environment.
Biological Control: Introducing natural predators of the target pest can be a sustainable long-term solution for pest control.
Physical Methods: Trapping, exclusion techniques, and sanitation practices can be effective in managing many pest populations.
Conclusion
Cyfluthrin remains a valuable tool in modern pest control. Its effectiveness and long-lasting residual action provide significant benefits. However, responsible use is crucial to minimize potential risks to human health, the environment, and beneficial insect populations. By understanding its properties, applications, and limitations, users can make informed decisions about using cyfluthrin and explore alternative methods when appropriate. Remember, integrated pest management (IPM) strategies that combine various control methods are often the most effective and sustainable approach for long-term pest control.

Help! What's wrong with my Plants?

By Kath Gadd and Hannah Preston
Well it would seem La Niña is here with a vengence along the NSW and QLD east coast, resulting in way too much rain and very uncomfortable humidity. It has been a tough summer for many plants. Not only have the weeds enjoyed an extreme growth spurt but the bugs and insects are out in full force too and the extra moisture in the air is also great for moulds and fungus to flourish. Many of you may have noticed plants being affected by this or just looking downright unhappy!
There are four factors that may be challenging your plants health at the moment and we are going to give you a quick run downâŠ
Sap SuckersÂ
Sap-sucking insects, such as scale, aphids and mealybugs, feed on the sugary-liquid that travels through plant tissues, slurping up the nutritious solution that should be feeding the plant! They tend to multiply quickly, weakening plants and often deform foliage. Many have tiny waxy bodies and secrete honeydew as a by-product of feeding. The honeydew attracts fungal diseases like sooty mould and also ants, which may protect the sap-suckers from predators and carry them to new plants.Â
Because they can be so prolific and so tiny the best way to treat them is with an insect spray. A white oil treatment is effective for many sap suckers, it coats the breathing pores of insects, suffocating them, and can be easily made up at home with dishwashing liquid and oil (you can also use other home-made mixtures like a chilli or garlic oil). Shop-bought pest oils also work â they usually operate on the same principle of suffocating pests and may contain other compounds to ensure knock-out. Pyrethrum, another good option, is slightly different. The active compound is naturally-derived from the pyrethrum Daisy and works by inhibiting an insectâs nervous system.
Whatever spray youâre using try to spray only the affected areas on both sides of the leaves/branches. Chemicals like pyrethrum are non-specific so will also kill the good insects and bees around your plants if you use them too much. Another option is manual removal. Some people have removed sap suckers by patiently scraping the leaves, or if the infestation is too large, blasting them off with a pressure hose.
Eucalypt with scale
Leaf chewersÂ
Leaf chewing insects have specialised mouthparts and often target young, tastier leaves and little seedlings. They include things like caterpillars, sawfly larvae and slugs. Theyâll often secrete toxins that make them unpalatable to potential predators like birds, and in that way, continue feeding on plants unharmed.Â
Some of the pest oils/sprays work for leaf chewers but you can also try manual strategies depending on the insect and its lifecycle. For example, the caterpillar on this White Cedar (Melia azedarach) below has been absolutely decimating the foliage. The grubs eat the leaves during the day then fall to the ground at night. Putting up a foil barrier around the base of the treeâs trunk seems to have stopped them being able to climb back up in the morning.Â
In the case of sawfly larvae, pruning off affected foliage before the infestation gets too large may be enough. Sawfly larvae feed mostly on bottlebrush. If found on established, adult plants they shouldnât be a problem but on vulnerable, young plants you need to remove them before itâs too late. Â
Caterpillars on White Cedar
Foil barrier to stop caterpillers climbing up to the leaves of the tree
DeficienciesÂ
Deficiencies usually present as discolouration in the leaves and are more common in rainy weather. Heavy rain washes out nutrients in poor soils â the washing out of nitrogen (N) and iron (Fe) can be a particular issue for natives and there have been devastating amounts of runoff and erosion in my region.Â
Yellowing of the leaves is one of the most common signs of deficiency. It can be hard to tell exactly what a plant is deficient in but providing some slow-release native fertiliser, iron chelates and/or adding trace elements like manganese, zinc and boron can help. Trace elements play a role in unlocking nutrients to plants, often via soil microorganisms. Soil microorganisms are the main underground energy hubs that convert inorganic forms of nutrients like nitrogen into bioavailable forms that plants can use.
Yellowing of grass tree leaves indicating nutrient deficiency
Moulds and FungusÂ
Mould and fungus can spread to plants via wind, water, soil and animals. Sooty mould is one of the most common variants on garden plants and it settles on the honeydew secreted by sap-suckers. It doesnât directly damage the plant itself but when it smothers lots of leaves it can stop the plant from being able to photosynthesise. The best way to treat the mould is by treating the source of the problem, the sap-sucker! But, you can also manually wipe off thickly coated mould with a damp cloth.Â
Other funguses and mould to to look out for are myrtle rust, which is detrimental to many of out native tree and shrubs, beginning as purple spots and turning into yellow pustules on the under-side of leaves, this fungus needs to be removed immediately by cutting off affected leaves and branches and disposing of them appropriately, so the spores donât spread.
Phytophora is another fungal mould that appears in humid, wet weather â it can appear as dieback on the leaf, turning into blight or rust, but also as root rot on larger specimens. It is caused by plants not coping with poor drainage and may begin as a problem around the root zone and not show up on the leaves until itâs too late.
Fungicides have limited scope and should not be expected to cure heavily infected plants, it is better to take a note of what is suffering and try to improve drainage and air flow around the plant.
The most important thing to do is keep an eye on your plants by checking them closely and regularly, especially in this weather when pests and diseases are rife.
Goodluck and I hope we get a good break from heavy rainfall soon!

Balcony Garden Basics
Thereâs no right or wrong way to go about starting a balcony garden. But, there are ways you can make your experience easier and more enjoyable. By starting with a garden basics kit, you set yourself up with all you need to get growing. Of course, this list is not the be-all-end-all, but itâs not designed to be. It forms the foundation of your growing experience â just like your garden, you will continue to add and grow as needed.
Watering Can This sounds obvious, but most people wonder why they even need a watering can. This handy device can carry between, one, two, or up to nine litres of water, making it easy to water multiple plants without the several back-and-forth trips to the tap. So, whatâs the difference to a large bottle of water? Eventually, you will need to mix fertiliser â if you want to give your plants a boost in growth â and the size of the opening on the watering can will make this far easier. Plus, itâs a lot more decorative than your average water bottle. You can find a variety of (fun!) colours and shapes.
Tarp or Protective Cover Thereâs no doubt about it, gardening can be dirty work. Not all the time, but if youâre planting seedlings or repotting, it can be difficult to contain all the potting mix. To help, lay a tarp or waterproof sheet down. That way, you can make as much mess as you want and then simply empty it into a compost bin or common area garden beds. It beats having to sweep!
Fertiliser If you want your plants to grow well, you will need to feed them with a fertiliser. They are available in a variety of formats â organic pellets, soluble, liquid, and prills â and work in different ways. Personally, I like liquid fertilisers as theyâre fast-acting (plants take up nutrients in liquid form). Look for one thatâs an organic blend as it also contains organic matter to help nourish the soil, too.
Organic Insecticide Insect pests are inevitable. Even if you live on the 24th floor of a high-rise building. Trust me, Iâve tried. Somehow, mealy bugs, aphids, and even caterpillars will make the journey up to visit and feast on your plants. And if theyâre not treated, they can cause plant health to quickly decline. An certified organic insecticide is generally made up of naturally occurring ingredients, like botanical oils and/or pyrethrum. Look for the ACO logo (Australian Certified Organic) when purchasing, to guarantee itâs certified organic.
Quality Potting Mix Not all potting mixes are created equal, but they are manufactured to an Australian Standard, so you can rest assured what you purchased is fit for purpose. Potting mixes will either have a red or black tick, which means theyâre compliant with Australian Standards. Black is a standard mix, it will provide a base for your plants to grow, but you will need add nutrients and other ameliorants for plants to thrive. A red tick product is a premium product and contains additives like water crystals, slow-release fertilisers, and wetting agents to assist with plant growth. The difference between the two is typically a few dollars, so I always recommend going for the premium product.
Few other items to consider: hand trowel and fork, bucket, secateurs, broad-brimmed hat, and sunscreen (especially if youâre pottering for hours).

A Beginner's Guide To Organic Pest-Free Gardening
Using as many organic techniques as possible in your garden or yard is the healthiest way to protect the environment and the people around you. But how can you protect your Garden of Eden from insects and critters that would like to make it their dinner? How can you resist breaking out the big guns, such as synthetic pesticides? We organic gardeners have our ways.
The Problem with Synthetic Pesticides The truth about synthetic pesticides is that they are very good at their jobs. In fact, they are too good, and that usually comes with a price. Synthetic chemicals (whether pesticides or herbicides) may seem to work faster initially. However, in the long run, you will find that they arenât any more effective than organics and usually end up doing more harm than good. Pesticides donât differentiate between the good guys and the bad guys. They kill everything, including pollinators and other beneficial insects. In addition, they donât do any favors for the environment, wildlife, and our human bodies.
Constantly Improve Your Garden Soil The first line of defense against garden pests is to improve your soil on a continual basis. Even the most fertile soil eventually becomes nutritionally depleted from hungry plants. Nutritionally depleted soil = nutritionally depleted (unhealthy) plants, and unhealthy plants are a magnet for pests and disease. Here are some tips for improving garden soil:
Whenever possible, donât till or remove topsoil from the garden. Regularly add compost and other amendments to the bed by simply layering them on top. The redworms and other beneficial organisms will do the work for you.
Rotate the plants in your garden beds. Many pests (and diseases) are focused on specific plant families. For example, cabbage loopers are particularly attracted to plants in the brassica family (cole crops). In the first growing season, the pests that find brassicas irresistible will be on the lookout for potential host plants. They may (or may not) find your broccoli in this first year. But once they do, they begin to set up camp for good. You can thwart their efforts for the next season by practicing plant rotation. If you have broccoli planted in one of your garden beds this year, next year plant them in a different bed. Do the same with each plant family.
Start your own compost pile. Compost is organic plant and animal matter thatâs completely broken down, making it readily available to plant roots. It adds nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, plus other nutrients (depending on the organic materials) such as copper, iron, iodine, manganese, boron, cobalt, and molybdenum. Compost also builds a rich, friable garden soil, so Iâm a fan of adding it to my garden beds every chance I get. The most cost-effective way to have a steady supply of compost is to make your own.
Plant green manures (cover crops). Green manures, aka cover crops, are legumes, grains, or grasses planted in a garden bed for introducing nitrogen, inhibiting weeds, preventing soil erosion, and adding organic matter. Legumes such as field peas, hairy vetch, red clover, and soybean (edamame) âfixâ nitrogen via the bacteria that lives in their roots. Once the legumes begin to flower, they are knocked down and turned under, releasing nitrogen into the soil. Grains and grasses such as winter rye, rape, wheat, and oats are excellent cover crops for discouraging weeds, preventing erosion, and generally building soil.
Call in the Natural Predators Mother Nature is fantastic at bringing balance to all things. She has always had the answer to plant pest overpopulation: natural predators, which include insects and other animals. For example, ladybugs from larva to adults will have devoured 5,000 aphids by the time they die, while a green lacewing larva consumes 60 aphids an hour. All you need to do is encourage them to visit the garden by planting what they love. Predatory insects will come for the appetizers (plants) and stay for the main course (pests). Bonus: Predators will often double as effective pollinators in the garden. The following are plants that will lure predators, as well as pollinators, to your garden.
40 Plants for Predatory Insects
Alyssum
Aster
Basil
Bee balm
Blazing Star
Borage
Butterfly bush
Calendula
Coreopsis

Nasturtium
Oregano
Purple coneflower
Queen Anneâs lace
Rosemary
Rudbeckia
Sage
Scabiosa
Stonecrop
Thyme
Verbena
Wallflower
Wild rose
Yarrow
Zinnia
By the way, not all predators are insects. Many birds, such as bluebirds, grosbeaks, swallows, and wrens, will be happy to feast on garden pests such as cucumber beetles, grasshoppers, stick bugs, and aphids.
Nontoxic and Low-Toxic When it comes to defining nontoxic and low-toxic pesticides, there are two schools of thought. The first being that many organic pesticides, whether they are purchased or made by the gardener, are considered ânontoxic.â For example, insecticidal soap such as the one made by Safer Brand is eco-friendly and nontoxic to people, pets, and wildlife. I think that this is true for the most part (although it can be irritating to sensitive skin, as well as the eyes). However, can an insecticidal soap tell the difference between pests and beneficial insects? No. And this can be said of many other organic controls as well. So the better question to ask is nontoxic to whom? This is where we come to the other school of thought, which is that anything that kills something canât be labeled as truly nontoxic. Whichever definition rings true for you, one thing is certain: The following products are much less toxic to the environment, people, and animals than their synthetic alternatives. That said, some organic pesticides are still highly toxic to bees.
Hand-to-Hand Combat: Sometimes you canât beat good, old-fashioned elbow grease. Hand-pick pests from your plants and squish, stomp, or drown them in a bucket of soapy water. Feed them to your chickens. Round up your kids, your sisterâs kids, and the neighborhood kids and pay them for their hunting skills. Never underestimate the blast of a water hose. This technique is very effective on aphids and other soft-bodied insects. Be sure to adjust the strength of the stream so it doesnât pummel plant leaves in the process.
Physical Barriers: Physical barriers such as floating row covers, netting, paper collars, and copper strips work surprisingly well against many pests such as snails, cabbageworms, flea beetles, squash bugs, and more. (Donât forget that row covers and netting will also keep pollinators from visiting your plants. So, remove them while the plants are blooming.)
Insecticidal Soaps: Insecticidal soaps are true soap (not detergents) mixtures that coat the bodies of insects and dry them out. Works well on soft-bodied insects such as mealybugs, aphids, scales, etc. Highly toxic to bees.
Diatomaceous Earth (horticultural grade): DE is crushed fossilized diatom and algae skeletons. It enters insect bodies and in effect dries them up. Works well for earwigs, ants, beetles, fleas, ticks, slugs, etc. While itâs safe for people in general, avoid breathing it into your lungs by wearing a dust mask while applying it. Highly toxic to bees.
Horticultural Oils: Horticultural oils are made with various oils (mineral, vegetable, soybean, etc.) and work by disrupting how some insectsâsuch as aphidsâeat, poisoning others, and smothering insect eggs. Highly toxic to bees.
Pyrethrins: Pyrethrins are derived from specific chrysanthemums and basically attack an insectâs central nervous system. They arenât considered the lowest toxicity; however, they are considered acceptable for organic gardening practices. They are biodegradable and break down quickly in the sunlight. Donât confuse pyrethrins (pyrethrum) with permethrin, which is its synthetic counterpart (and very toxic to cats and other animals). Highly toxic to bees.
Do Organic Pest Control Practices Really Work? I have often heard people say they donât believe organic methods work nearly as well as the more toxic poisons found on store shelves. I always wonder if those with this mindset have ever actually tried organic techniques and strategies. Or perhaps, if they simply have not given them enough time to work their magic. Organic pest control methods do work, especially if several are implemented at the same time. Yes, you might lose a few seedlings to snails or have a few holes in some leaves. But in the end, organic gardening practices still offer the most people-, animal-, and Earth-friendly practices for maintaining a healthy balance in the garden. Â

Winter in the Vegetable Patch

âWinterâ means different things to different people â it all depends on where you live! There are two distinct winters for people across Australia:
Mild in the warm temperate, subtropical and tropical climates (north coast of New South Wales right up to Cairns and across the top end).
Cold in southern regions (from the central coast of NSW across the continent to Perth and all points south).
Winter Climates Explained
A normal winterâs day in your area greatly influences your vegetable and herb gardening.
You're reading: Winter in the Vegetable Patch
Find out what type of winter you can expect based on where you live:
Warm temperate, subtropical and tropical regions
Winter means:
The dry season from April to September.
Low humidity and rainfall.
Warm, sunny days but chilly nights.
This weather is fairly typical of winter from the north coast of New South Wales right up to Cairns, as well as the northern coastline of Western Australia and the âtop endâ.
Inland regions may experience much colder nights but the days will still be mild to warm.
Colder regions
Read more: Feeding Birds | When To Feed Garden Birds â The RSPB
From the central coast of NSW across the continent to Perth and all points south, winter is:
Typically quite cold, often sunny but long stretches of âgreyâ cloudy days are common.
An average temperature hovering around the low to mid teens.
Frosty in inland areas.
The snow season on higher peaks.
What to Grow in Winter: Colder Regions
In areas where night time temperatures may drop to eight degrees celsius or lower and where the soil is also cold (15 degrees celsius or less):
Sowing and planting of new crops into the garden is generally not recommended.
When the soil is cold, sap flow in plants is sluggish, roots take up minimal moisture and nutrients and growth slows right down.
Seeds will not germinate until the soil warms again in spring, and young seedlings may succumb to the cold before they have a chance to acclimatise and start growing.
Mid year in the south is mostly about harvesting the traditional winter crops while waiting for the weather to warm up in spring for the sowing and planting of summer vegetables.
What You Can Do:
Itâs the right time for lifting, dividing and replanting crowns of the following:
Rhubarb
Asparagus
Horseradish
Globe artichoke
Some seeds may be sown into seed trays kept indoors or under cover for warmth, to produce seedlings ready to plant out into the garden in early spring. They include:
Broad beans
Onions
Spinach
Silverbeet and rainbow chard
The winter vegetable plot should be producing a good range of cold season crops including:
Cabbage and cauliflower
Broccoli and broccolini
Brussels sprouts
Kale including Tuscan kale
Winter lettuce (âpick and come againâ varieties)
Silverbeet
Care Tip
To keep these crops growing and producing well, feed them with Scotts Performance Naturals
Vegetable & Herb Organic Based Fertiliser every 3 months
What to Grow in Winter: Warmer Regions
In the warm temperate to tropical regions of Australia, temperatures during the day may range from the low to high 20s even though nights may be chilly (below 10 in some parts). In these areas, soils absorb heat from the sun during the day and retain most of that warmth overnight.
Thatâs good news for those wanting to grow vegetables and herbs year-round!
Mid-winter is a great time for sowing vegetable and herb seeds and planting out seedlings â even of some of those crops more often associated with cold areas like cabbage, cauliflower, kale and turnips.
Seeds of the following may be sown now either direct into the soil or into seed trays for later transplanting:
Beetroot
Silverbeet
Spinach
Carrots
Lettuce (all types)
Beans (bush and climbing)
Spring or green onions
Leeks
Fennel
Peas (snow/sugar snap and shelling varieties)
Mid year is also a great time for planting tuberous and perennial crops like:
Jerusalem artichoke
Galangal
Ginger
Turmeric
Rhubarb
Asparagus
Globe artichoke
Whatever you are planting or sowing, remember to:
Fertilise the soil well before you start with Scotts Performance Naturals
Vegetable & Herb Organic Based Fertiliser
Water in wellÂ
Watch for chewing and sucking insect pests, and apply the non-systemic Defender Pyrethrum Insect Spray to control them if necessary.
Preparing the Patch
Successful vegetable and herb gardening, especially in winter, requires good soil preparation.
Read more: EARLY SPRING GARDENING: WHAT TO PLANT AND WHEN â IFA Country Stores
Young plants will struggle to establish and thrive if the soil is under-nourished.
Before sowing seeds or planting out seedlings:
Apply even more nutrients
Organic material slowly releases nutrients as it decomposes and breaks down.
To give plants a boost when itâs needed most, topdress with one or more of the following:
Scotts Performance Naturals
Vegetable & Herb Organic Based Fertiliser
Blood and bone
Fish emulsion
Aged manures
Scotts Performance Naturals
Soil Improver designed for digging into soils
Working and turning the soil
Over time, soil can become compacted and hard.
This is detrimental to plants because it:
Reduces the air space in the soil.
Makes it difficult for water to soak in.
Prevents plant roots from easily penetrating the soil.
Working the soil helps to break it up to:
Create pockets of air that are essential for plant growth.
Allow roots to grow and develop.
Let water penetrate down to the roots.
Release nutrients and allow them to move down through the soil.
Encourage the return of earthworms and beneficial microbes.
Lead to a soil that is healthy and alive.
